Dear Carlo,

I'd like to inform you and your colleagues at Milano about the upcoming
review meeting by the European XFEL-STI (Scientific and technical
issues) working group on March 15/16 here at DESY. This is a committee
meeting, in format and style clearly different from the TESLA meetings
we are used to. The committee will review the XFEL technical design as
documented in a first draft of a new updated TDR (just fresh from the
print) as well as our revised cost estimate for the facility (TDR and
cost estimate are not free yet for publication). The preparation for the
meeting, in particular for presenting the TDR draft in overview talks
and all details of the cost estimate, will be taken over by the project
group at DESY. It would be very nice and perfectly appropriate, though,
if we had representatives here for the meeting from those labs which are
already involved in work specific to the XFEL. In addition to then being
able to present technical details to the committee (if requested) on
specific components (in case of INFN-Milano concerning Modules and PITZ,
I think), we could clearly demonstrate that the XFEL work is already a
collaborative effort.

Please let me know who from Milano would be available and willing to
attend the meeting. I'll be happy to provide more information on the
scope and format. One uncertainty which I cannot resolve is to predict
to which extend or if at all the experts who make the effort to come to
the meeting will actually be asked by the committee to make
